I’m Nesting

IMG_1300
Nothing quite says spring like a bird’s nest full of eggs ready to hatch.  It’s like a symbol of the renewal of life that takes place this time of year.

I made a little nest of my own using some materials I already had on hand: jute twine, a bowl, and glue.  I soaked the twine in a mixture of glue and water.  I just used plain ol’ school glue.  Then, I turned the bowl upside down and started wrapping the twine around the sides of the bowl about midway.  I used a separate piece to do the base of the bowl and just went round and round starting at the center and extending all the way out to the sides.   I let it dry overnight.

Sorry I have no photos of wrapping the jute but I had to use both hands and they were all sticky with glue!

While I waited, I worked on the eggs.  I am using paper mache eggs.  I bought these at Hobby Lobby just because they were only 34 cents  (+ a 30% discount)  and I just couldn’t pass them up!  You could easily make your own or use wooden or plastic or whatever other eggs you want.  These really look alright as is but I want pretty blue eggs so I am going to paint them.  I mixed these two colors of craft paint together to get my desired shade and just painted away.

The little price stickers were difficult to remove but it didn’t really matter once I painted, the remaining adhesive and paper didn’t show.  It just blended in to the texture of the egg.  After the first coat is dry, you can touch up any spots that are missing paint due to holding the eggs.

Once the nest was dry, I just slid the bowl out and turned it over.  It is not a perfectly round shape.  Some of the twine has came loose but I think that makes it look more nest-like.  It is a bit delicate and could probably be made more sturdy somehow but it’s fine for me as is because I don’t plan on moving it around a whole lot.  I set it out on a table and laid my eggs (ha-ha) inside.

Now, I’m ready for spring!  What symbolizes spring for you?
