How To Get Rid Of The Ring Around The Toilet

I’m gettin’ down & dirty today. Cleaning toilets.  Doesn’t get much dirtier than that!  So, how do you get rid of that yucky brown ring around the toilet bowl?  You’ve cleaned the toilet but it still looks stained and unclean.  Well, the ring is not actually a stain but mineral deposits from hard water.  So, instead of trying to wipe it clean, it needs to be scraped off.  There are two things I know from experience that can remove it.  One is a pumice stone.  The other method is using sandpaper.  Yes, sandpaper!

I get a pack of assorted grit sandpaper from the dollar store and it works great. I love that it is disposable.  I just toss the paper in the trash when I am done!

Make sure you are wearing gloves because you’ve got to get your hand inside the toilet bowl.  Flush the toilet and while the water level is down, gently rub it on the ring and watch it disappear.  Flush again and the ring is gone!  Toss the sandpaper and you are doneAmazing, right?  This method doesn’t scratch the toilet, it simply removes the buildup without any harsh chemicals.

Now, you can move on to bigger and better things than scrubbing the toilet….like laundry! :)

  1. Aha! Thanks for sharing what the ring in the toilet actually is...all this time I have tried numerous cleaners (I even bought a new kind last week) trying to get the ring out but none of the worked. I'm definately going to do this!!! Thanks!!

  3. I've actually recently discovered an even easier, completely 'hands free' option! snip off a few pieces of magic eraser and drop them into the toilet, leaving them there overnight. They bob around and clean up the ring for you all by themselves! Of course, if your toilet ring was quite extensive then maybe the sandpaper would be called for.

    1. No, it didn't cause any problems for mine. I just scraped at the ring but I don't think it could. You could possibly test a small area to be sure.

  5. Thanks for the sandpaper tip! We have hard water and I've used a pumice stone on the toilet and areas around my sink with success but the sink part and some of the curvier parts of the toilet are harder to get to with a blocky/non-flexible stone. The sandpaper will hopefully do the trick. :D

  7. I've never thought to use sandpaper!!!
I've cleaned some really bad toilets too, one I actually used a putty knife to scrape off huge chunks of mineral deposits... I wonder how much time I would have saved know this trick now ;)

  8. It's too bad you can't use sandpaper on the laundry! Awesome tip. Totally worth risking people looking over my shoulder at lunch and seeing that I'm browsing pics of toilet bowls.

And now that we've seen your toilet bowl, Kathie, I think we all feel like you're family. I'll send you my Christmas list soon. And the kids'.
