Crepe Paper Rose Topiary

IMG_0929
I have been planning on making a topiary for a while but haven’t gotten around to it.  Today, as I was bloghopping around I found a great tutorial at House of Smith’s for making crepe paper flower balls and I knew this was what I wanted to do for my topiary.

I already had everything I needed on hand:  styrofoam ball form from the Dollar Tree, wooden dowel, crepe paper streamers, hot glue, spray paint, and a small pot.  I basically followed her tutorial on making the flowers.  It is just like making fabric rosettes except you are using the streamers.   As you roll the streamer up and twist and turn, you just add a drop of hot glue here and there to hold it together.  Expect a few hot glue burns.

After making all of the flowers, I hotglued them randomly to my styrofoam ball being sure to fill in all of the spaces.  Then, I took one of the little terra cotta pots I picked up at the thrift store for 25 cents and a wooden dowel and hit them up with some good ol’ white spray paint.  After that was dry, I poked one end of the dowel through the styrofoam ball and the other end through another little piece of styrofoam that I placed inside the pot.  I hid the styrofoam in the pot with a little paper shred.  Then, I just tied on a pretty pink ribbon and I was all done.

Making these crepe paper rosettes was so fun and I can see using them in so many ways.  They would look great on a wreath, on a frame, as a bouquet,  decorating a party table, strung along a ribbon to make a pretty garland- in fact, I think that will be my next project.
