Wild Pink Glazed Desk

IMG_1100
I was browsing around Walmart and there among all of the mistinted (aka oops) paint was this shade called Fanciful Fuschia.  It cost me a whole $3.  I knew as soon as I saw it, it would work great for my tween daughter’s room.  I’ve been slowly working on a pink/black theme for her room.   Everything in her room is mismatched.  The furniture, the bedding- nothing goes together at all.  She has some good pieces just not in their current state.  I decided to use the oops paint on her desk.  We bought this desk from a thrift store a year or so ago for $20 and haven’t gotten around to painting it.

It is not real wood, just particle board so I was afraid to try to sand it before painting.  I hauled it outside since it was such a beautiful day and wiped it down a little (ok, not much).  I took all of the hardware off and set it to the side.

Then I just started painting.  I probably should have primed it at least but I tend to just jump right into things in a rush.    I painted a couple of coats on then spray painted the handles with flat black spray paint.

And yes, I did spill all that paint there in the grass.  What can I say, I’m a klutz!  Once the paint was dry, I mixed some Behr glaze with a little black acrylic paint (3:1 ratio) and brushed it on one small area at the time.  After I brushed it on, I wiped it away with an old t-shirt.

I have to tell you the glazing was the most fun part!  I want to glaze everything now!  Once it was all glazed like a Krispy Kreme donut, I sprayed it down with some Krylon sealer.  I added the hardware back and brought it back inside.

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.  It looks wild, doesn’t it?  My daughter is thrilled with it. Hopefully, it's not too bright that it will distract her from her work.  She mostly uses it for art instead of homework though (she usually does homework at the dining room table).  I will have to repaint the hardware because the flat black is just too dull and it looks like I may have missed some spots.  I’ll just go over it with some gloss black and I think it will be fine.  I am still working on her chair for the desk, hopefully I will have it finished tomorrow.  Eventually, I hope to find some cute pink and black scrapbooking paper to line the drawers with.  I was glad to find some time this week to work on a project, it’s been kinda crazy around here!

Proud to have this project featured along so many other great projects at:
