Computer Keyboard Frame - A Father’s Day Gift Idea

IMG_4721

My kids saw something similar to this in a store and thought it would make a perfect Father’s Day gift for their dad.  He has a computer repair business and this frame would look great on his desk.  However, they didn’t have the money to buy it so I said, “Why don’t you just make it?”.  That is exactly what they did.

They removed the keys from an old keyboard that was no longer working.  The keys really just pop off!

We had an old 4x6 black frame that wasn’t being used.  It had a pretty wide border around it and it was the perfect fit for two rows of keys.

They picked out the keys they wanted to use and lined them up exactly where they would go.  They then carefully applied Super Glue Fix-All Adhesive to each key and glued them into place and waited for them to dry.

This frame could easily be adapted to suit dad’s interests or profession.  For example, if he’s a real handyman, glue on screws, nails, bolts, etc.

Once we came up with that idea, we decided to make a pencil cup to match the frame and use up the leftover keys.  The black metal cup came from Dollar Tree.  I think it would have came out a little better if the cup was square instead of round but we made it work.

This time we used hot glue to attach the keys to the top rim of the cup and then randomly to the sides.  It worked great and complements the picture frame.

Well, we just couldn’t leave well enough alone at that point!  Since he works on computers, we happened to have an old laptop keyboard and I thought we could attach it to a matching 8x10 frame to make the frame look like a computer.

They used the same glue that they used for the other frame to put the two together.  I put a picture of the kids in the frame and it was ready to give. The kids like to pretend to type on the keys.

We only spent $2 and have a great  personalized gift (actually, three gifts in all).  Hopefully, he will like it and won’t see this post!
