From Dull to Diva (Thanks Oops Paint!)

IMG_4857

My sweet mother in law wanted me to get this dresser.  Her sister had kicked it to the curb and it was literally outside in the elements but she saw something in it so my dad picked it up for me.

It was missing the middle door so he cut a piece of plywood and attached it with hinges and added a little knob he had laying around.  Also, the back was like cardboard and all warped from being outside so he sturdied it a bit by nailing all around the edges.  It had a mirror with it but it was really flimsy and not really worth attaching back to it.  Maybe I will find some other use for it.  So, now it was in my hands.  This dresser had definitely seen better days.  It was just kind of dull and lifeless.

The veneer on the top was broken and revealed some lovely particle board underneath.  The drawers were solid wood though and there were some details in the wood….

My daughters’ room is overflowing with clothes. They could really use another dresser.  So, I went to my local Wallyworld and checked out the cans of Oops paint they had available.  Standing out above all the rest was the pinkiest pink you could imagine.  Apparently, someone changed their mind on pepto-bismal pink.  But, this is for a couple of 7 & 8 yr. old girls.  It is like Barbie pink.  It’s perfect & only seven bucks!  I also grabbed some gloss black enamel paint for the hardware.

So, that takes care of the paint.  What about that beat up surface on the top?  How was I going to fix that?  I decided that considering it was particle board underneath and that it is going to take even more of a beating than it has already had going in my girls’ room, I wasn’t about to try to fix it.  Therefore, I have to cover it up.  I went to Home Depot and got a piece of hardboard for eight bucks and had them cut it to the size I needed.  I then took it home and glued it on using liquid nails.  There.  Done.

Two coats of pinky pink and some shiny black handles and we were good to go.  She went from dull and lifeless to girly girl and glamorous.  A total diva.  I guess my mother in law was right!  :)

Total cost: less than $20 and I still have plenty of paint and hardboard left for other projects.  I’ve got two happy little girls and that’s priceless!

  19. I can’t believe how cute this is! We were just in the market for a cheap dresser for my teen daughter, but now we can just give her current furniture a makeover. You just saved me tons of money from my Dish paycheck, so thanks! Yay! I just wish I had your vision for this whole décor thing. Do you use any resources in particular for inspiration? If you do, please let me know! The only places I know to go to are HGTV and DIY network. Almost every recording on my DVR is from those channels. Luckily, I have the Hopper DVR with loads of recording space to accommodate my little DIY addiction. But other sources for DIY help would be much appreciated! Thanks again for the wonderful post.
