Felt Heart Hair Clips Tutorial

IMG_0566

I saw some really cute felt heart hair barrettes over at Craftzine and thought I could do something similiar with alligator clips.  You can find alligator clips at any beauty supply store.
Supplies Needed:
Felt
Alligator Clips
5/8” Ribbon
Lighter
Hot Glue Gun
Scissors

These are easy and fun to make and you can get as fancy as you want with them, trimming the edges with pinking shears, stitching them, layering different colors, or adding beads, sequins, buttons, or whatever you like.  Or you can keep it simple and sweet.  You start with your hearts.  I just freehanded a heart on paper for my template but there are tons of heart templates online if you want to print one out.  You want to make sure your heart is wide enough to cover the clip.

Cut out your heart shape from the felt.  If you want to add anything to your heart, now would be the best time.

After your hearts are cut out, start on the clips.  Make sure your hot glue gun is ready.

Cut a piece of your ribbon approximately 4 3/4 “ long. Then you want to seal the ends so they won’t fray.  Just hold a lighter near them for just a second to create a seal.  Now just hot glue the ribbon to the clip, starting on the back.  I just do the edge of the back, not all the way down.  Wrap your ribbon around the edge of the clip where the spring is, over the top and under the top part of the clip.
It should look kind of like this.

Now, just hot glue the heart to the clip!

Then, find a cute little girl and clip it in her hair!

See how easy that was!  What’s so great about these is that you could do this with any shape, like a Shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day or an egg for Easter, etc.
